Getting Ready for the Return of the Spotted Lanternfly

Country Garden Club of Perrysburg will present a program on preparing for the Spotted Lanternfly. The Spotted Lanternfly is an invasive insect whose numbers are expected to grow this year in Ohio and the nymphs or juvenile stage of this unwanted pest will soon be hatching. Because the lanternfly is a serious concern, Country Garden Club of Perrysburg is hosting a presentation on what individuals can do to thwart these pests. Amy Stone, Extension Educator with the Ohio State University in Lucas County, will be giving this presentation on Tuesday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Way Library, 101 E. Front St., Perrysburg. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. “Spotted lanternflies are both an agricultural and horticultural pest and become a nuisance when populations increase and their presence becomes obvious to even the most casual observer,” says Ms. Stone. “This community program will arm you with information to immediately begin looking for over-wintering egg masses before they hatch this spring,” she adds. “We will share what we should be looking for and discuss management options including the step, stomp and squish method; trapping; vacuuming; and treatment alternatives.” “We know there are a lot of questions and concerns related to lanternflies and we are happy to be able to host this presentation and open it up to the public,” says Linda Justen, CGC Horticulture Committee co-chair. Linda notes that educational materials will be provided and there will be time for questions and answers during the presentation.
