The History of the Country Garden Club of Perrysburg, Ohio

For over 90 years, the Country Garden Club has contributed to the preservation, conservation, and beautification of Perrysburg, Ohio and the surrounding community. From their first community project in 1932 to the present, the energetic members of the CGC have worked tirelessly toward the betterment of northwest Ohio.

In September, 1932, Country Garden Club (“CGC”) was organized by several prominent local women. By 1933, the CGC was already a member of the Garden Club Forum of Toledo and the Garden Club of Ohio. In 1942, it became the only garden club from Northwest Ohio to be admitted as a member of The Garden Club of America.

We are pleased to share the following PDF file that details more about our founders and our history:

What does it mean to be a member of Country Garden Club?

We hold monthly meetings, typically August through June, which feature local, regional, and national speakers on a wide variety of gardening, floral design, nature photography and conservation topics.

We hold annual fundraisers to raise money that goes directly back into projects in our local community. Our annual Trunk Show is a three day fall shopping event at Carranor Hunt & Polo Club that is currently raising an average of over $50,000 annually and has been our largest fundraising event for over 35 years. Additionally, we have begun a new educational fundraiser in our Lecture Series, just completing our second annual speaker event; An Evening with Douglas Brinkley, Environmental Activist in April 2025.

Our committees plan field trips and garden outings throughout the year that offer fun, informal opportunities for members to learn and connect. Our active members are required to join and serve on one of five standing committees: Conservation, Floral Design, Garden History and Design, Horticulture and Photography,

Our club holds a Garden Club of America sanctioned Flower Show every 3-4 years with our next show scheduled for May 2026 at Way Public Library.

We engage in many civic service projects that contribute to our local community every year. Annually we provide hands-on prep for the Downtown Perrysburg Holiday decorations and help plan and provide for the Downtown Perryburg hanging baskets during the growing season as well. We plant the planters outside the patient rooms at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, both in the spring for the growing season and again in the fall with winter appropriate decor. Through our community project grants, in addition to the monetary donations, we often get our hands dirty by providing the planting and maintenance manpower for garden projects throughout Perrysburg at locations like the Perrysburg Historical Museum, Historic Fort Meigs, Woodland Park, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 577 Foundation, and countless others through the years.

As an all-volunteer organization, we encourage our members to get involved in a variety of ways, big and small. Utilizing the many different talents of each and every member is the magic powering our continued success as an organization. We are so proud of our long, rich history and the visible impact of our philanthropy in our local community. We treasure our Country Garden Club friendships and the camaraderie of working together for a good cause.
